BPA expresses its concern over the arrest of labor activist Khalil Bu Hazza

Bahrain Press Association, London – UK | May 9,2026: The Bahrain Press Association (BPA) expresses its deep concern over the arrest of blogger and labor activist Khalil Bu Hazza on Sunday, May 3, 2026, following his summons for questioning over opinions and posts published on the platform X.

The continued prosecution of citizens for peacefully expressing their views reflects the ongoing deterioration of public freedoms and freedom of opinion and expression in Bahrain. It further entrenches the use of legal and security measures to restrict and control the public sphere.

The BPA affirms that respect for freedom of expression and opinion constitutes one of the essential foundations for state stability and for strengthening trust between society and its institutions. Criminalizing criticism and expanding prosecutions over opinions creates an environment in which free public debate is absent and fundamental safeguards for civil rights are steadily eroded.

The BPA calls on the authorities to immediately release Khalil Bu Hazza, halt prosecutions related to freedom of opinion and expression, and adhere to constitutional provisions and international standards guaranteeing citizens the right to peaceful expression without fear of arrest or intimidation.
